This is a beautifully written book on American sterling silver, filled with timeless information on a heritage that is more valuable today than it was when this book was written. The historical material on the great companies who manufactured sterling dinnerware in America and the designers they hired, and the outstanding patterns they created is a pleasure to read; and this is one of the few guides which discusses the patterns in aesthetic terms. If I hadn't read Dolan's comments on "Beauvoir" by Tuttle, I likely wouldn't have purchased a service of it on eBay. She was absolutely right about it's being underrated. It is unique and lovely to behold. I look forward to acquiring more. Since this book was published silver has known more than one spectacular high during which many flatware services were melted down for the money. And who knows? We may see more of that in the future; and loss of our already diminished silver flatware heritage in other ways. There is still a great deal left for the interested collector on eBay at reasonable prices and this book, though it is quite old, is of tremendous value for those approaching the internet market and other markets. One thing: There is no section in this book on Tiffany and no explanation as to why, but there are enough books on Tiffany to make up for it. This book should be in every collector's library. It would be marvelous if Ms. Dolan updated it. As for the outdated prices, well, they really are a very small part of the book. One can check the price of just about any silver item at Antique Cupboard or Replacements online today and get a general idea of how to view an offering on eBay in comparison. To repeat: I recommend this book highly. It's one of the most enjoyable and informative books I've ever read about sterling silver flatware, and one of the most memorable.

The book is dated. Use it only for identification purposes. The pricing information is useless as the book was published in the early 90s.
Very nice book, described well.No smells, rips or tears and just over all nice and clean.Hate that Amazon will not allow combining on shipping. I guess their cut of the money, helps keep them in business.But the Book company did a great job describing and shipping my items to me. I would purchase from them again.
I bought this book along with Sterling Flatware by Tere Hagan. I find it difficult to use and poorly organized. She has a lot of information on certian patterns and makers but little on others. There is no index and information is incomplete. I use it as a back up to Hagan's book as she sometimes will have a pattern that Hagen dosen't have. Neither book is complete and this book has some information and a couple of Manufactures that Hagan dosen't cover still both books are valuable but even together not complete. I still have quite a few unknowns in my collection.
Great reference book for vintage silver patterns.
