About the Author
Ha-Joon Chang was born in Seoul, South Korea, and teaches Economics and Development Studies at the University of Cambridge. His books include the international bestseller Bad Samaritans: The Myth of Free Trade and the Secret History of Capitalism, Kicking Away the Ladder, winner of the Myrdal Prize, and 23 Things They Don't Tell You About Capitalism. Chang was awarded the Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought. He lives in Cambridge with his wife, Hee-Jeong Kim, and two children, Yuna, and Jin-Gyu.

I'm not quite finished yet. Maybe I'm done with 85-90%. It is not exactly light reading, as one mightexpect of what is essentially something of an economics text. This is the third book by this author I've read. Each has been an eye opener. There are simply so so manyideas and "facts" we all hold about economics which do not really stand careful scrutiny. In each of the threebooks by Ha-Joon Chang I've read he has really stripped away at false assumptions, naive ideas, simplisticviewpoints, all with an accessible style of writing.Honestly, I wish we could somehow take all of our politicians and force them to read his works. Our worldwould be better for it.
After hearing the author's talk on his book on BoookTV.org. I bought it. I was not disappointed in reading it. This is a most enjoyable read, full of easy to understand explanations, little asides and jokes, informative footnotes at the bottom of pages,and short bibliographical references at the end of chapters. Dr. Chang's tome is an eloquent and persuasive refutation that economics is boring or the "dismal science." He has certainly made it very interesting even though it was with some skepticism that I first cracked it open his volume. It is well worth reading for anyone who, like me did not care much for courses in economics. For me at least, they were all dismal and grim in equal measure. This book is just the opposite. It makes economics the "gay science" to borrow the title of Nietzsche's book without prejudice to the current use of that originally joyful adjective.
This is the best possible introduction to economics I have come across and I have been studying economics and practicing it for 50 years. I especially like the fact that he gives a brief outline of modern economic history, grounding the book in reality. I also like that he summarized 9 different fundamental approaches to economics so breaking the grip of current orthodoxy. He suggests what each approach (Neo Classical, Keynesian, Austrian, Institutional, Behavioral, Schumpeterian etc is useful for and what its limitations are. Once you know there is more than one economics you gain immediately in ability to navigate the subject. He does what he says: teaches you how to think about economics not what to think. Also this is brilliantly written and very gripping. I give it to anyone of my friend's children who go to university to study the subject. This is actually a gift copy for one of them,
This book is specifically written for those who understand the importance of the subject to their lives, but despair of ever grasping it in all its maddeningly technical and mathematical detail.Chang takes a subject-matter approach: he treats economics not as a theoretical construct but as a field of study of certain phenomena such as production, labor, markets, and so on. The book is organized by such subjects as well. It can get a little dense in spots, but most topics are headed by an italicized sentence that gives the "executive summary" of the discussion.I think the most important takeaway from this readable and winsome work is Chang's insistence that the purpose is not to convince you that one school of economics had all the right answers - he doesn't believe this himself. The purpose is to help you understand enough about the different ones to see what is better or worse about each of them, their power and their limitations, what they treat and what they leave untreated. All in order that readers may decide for themselves what economic tools have the best chance to promote the kind of world they want to live in.
This is a very easy-to-read, enjoyable introduction to economics. It explains in layman terms many of the ideas and concepts that we hear everyday on the news and the debates between the different economic theories. If you have received any formal training in economics, this book is probably not for you. But if the only training you have are a couple of courses in college, more than 20 years ago, you will find it refreshing.
A couple of years before the 2008 collapse I was hearing radio advertisements for so called "interest only smart (mortgage) loans. I thought that they should have been called "stupid loans" but I figured that the regulators were doing their job and that the bankers were doing due diligence. I was obviously wrong.If only for its sucicnt and stratforward explanation of Asset Backed Securities, Collateralized Debt Obligations and Default Swaps this is a great book. And that is a small part of the book. This is the most fair-minded explanation of the various theories of economics I have ever read. It didn't change my point of view a great deal, but I've always been skeptical of the arguments offered by the right and the left. I do have a greater understanding of the weaknesses of my default positions on economic ishues and the rational behind positions I tend to dismiss.
This book explain concepts that we thought difficult in simple ways adding the historical perspective required to contextualize the information being presented.The book takes a pragmatic approach, it presents different point of views and schools of economics as well as the impact they have had (and still have) in different parts of our changing history.A must read for anybody interested in economics (even a little) and history.
He's definitely my favorite living economist. This is a much more technical work than the other book of his that I've read, I believe I gained a great deal more from this one. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in the subject.
